Lizzy?

OmG, I had forgotten all about this....thanks for 'reminding' me.....

This site is a great place to chill when things get nutso. (As it has this week for me; though the pain of getting sucked out of my calm space for a bit is going to be well worth the cost, as the benefits are like MJ Smith has stated.

Its so wonderful that you sparked this back today, Lizzy....and American Indian friend is here too, as I seemed to have called up that spirit in my battle cry for Tibetans  (I likened the attempt to denigrate the Tibetans on Superbowl commercial to the dime store wooden indian memes created in the 1700's/1800's)

I'm not one to talk a lot about the 'unseen' and the spirit world; though I do believe in them, as our inner spirit does project/ripple out as ML Smith so aptly stated below.  This little interaction confirms that :-)

Thanks :-)

p.s. we were able to send a tsunami 'ripple' out this week, flipping the tide as it were, from blindness/denial to the beginning of awareness...

here is how the "American Delusion" is crashing on the rocks.

Now? We have to get help people get up, dust off, and get on a healthy path. No longer do we have to sadly hold the "bridge out" sign as spreading eagle poetically states in his allegory.  They are beginning to see that now....and are understandable scared. We have to give compassion, in return for the brutal blows they have been giving in their ignorant flailing about.  This is going to be a trial of patience, eh?

Just watching is the way to have everything under control. Our thoughts and emotions and what happens to us is the result of our karma - causes bearing fruit under certain conditions.  If we wish to create positive karma and a better future for ourselves and others we have to change our habitual patterns by first pacifying and taming our mind. Of course we cannot go around trying to pacify and tame the minds of others but we can try to emphasize with them and have compassion for them as everyone is really looking for happiness, as the Dalai Lama is continuously reminding us. This working on our own minds will definitely lead to a better world "out there" too. The Zen Master Suzuki Roshi puts it very nicely when he says that when we meditate our spouse meditates, the whole world meditates. This means like ripples in a pond our calmness spreads out to reach all we are in contact with.

Thanks for your input Lizzy. No, I don't think you are rambling - you have made a couple of interesting points. Yes, I too think dividing everything into two camps - either good or evil - is a little outdated and should be confined to the good old American Westerns, where you had the good guys dressed in white and the bad guys dressed in black just so you couldn't get mixed up. I think nowadays people are realizing there's a lot more grey - an in between - out there.

Your second point - that Americans should just "sit" still for a while, reflect, breathe - is I think just the solution we are looking for. Sogyal Rinpoche, a famous Tibetan Buddhist master called all the busy rushing around he witnessed in the West as a form of "active laziness". We are so busy in our everyday life, we just don't have time to consider what really matters.

I think like you however that we are at a crossroads in history where more and more people are interested in seeking alternative solutions to simply more and more of everything, represented  by the American Dream. I share the Dalai Lama's optimism that things are improving and we are indeed becoming more and more compassionate as human beings. We just need to be more in touch with our own inner most nature, our own kind heart, which as you rightly say we can best find by sitting still for a while, reflecting and breathing.

Wow, I just saw all this arguments......dont have time to read it all; but think there is some misunderstanding here. Will get back later on this when I have time on computer again .....until then, cease fire, ok? ;-) This is, after all, a site dedicated to HHDL....I'm not sure he would like this discourse.

Looking around the world you won't find a better balance of secular democracy and religious and individual freedom as exists in America. I happen to think it is still a shining example in the world. Of course as a Buddhist there are things I find I cannot agree with such as capital punishment, which I think should be outlawed. I am also dissappointed by the level of greed and power-hungriness existing in American society and certainly much of the so-called American dream does indeed appear to be based on delusion - a delusion that constant growth and insustainable development is a God-given right. However I am optimistic that American society also provides the means for correcting itself - secularist democracy and religious and personal freedom in balance. Also as a Buddhist who follows the Dalai Lama I realise Buddhism is not the only religion and it does not hold a monopoly on compassion, which is really what we all need more of all over the world.
