In the book - Becoming Enlightened, His Holiness the Dalai Lama says;
"In order to develop an altruistic intention to become enlightened we must first identify enlightenment itself. We do this by understanding that the minds of all sentient beings are empty of inherent existence, which leads to an awareness that the very concept of inherent existence itself is mistaken....."
I don't understand the concept of inherent existence. Can anybody explain it to me?
Thank you!

Hi Brooke,
'Inherent existence' refers to an existence that has not come about through cause and effect or by being labelled. The opposite to 'inherent existence' is an existence which has arisen from causes and/or labels.

When we think about it, nothing can arise without being dependent on something else. This means that however pleasant or unpleasant that sentient being is, there is a reason for that. And if there is a reason, then we can help change the causes. But to do that we need to have great wisdom from our own side, which means we need to become fully enlightened.

Well, inherent existence, means exististing by itself or by independent from any other factor or condition. That is the false projection or way of grasping of our ignorance to all phenomena. Empty of inherent existence is the ultimate nature of existence. Thats my way of understanding and description.
Hi, Tenzin Chonyi, please explain further your statement:

"'Inherent existence' refers to an existence that has not come about through cause and effect or by being labelled. The opposite to 'inherent existence' is an existence which has arisen from causes and/or labels."

¿What to you mean by "the opposite to inherent existence?
